CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – Changes in leadership did not affect UVA Health University Medical Center’s status is they remained as in 2024 one of two Virginia hospitals among the Becker’s Hospital Review list of “100 Great Hospitals in America: 2025”.

The medical trade industry magazine does the rundown at the end of every year, and UVA Health is regularly included.

This listing came in a challenging year that saw the resignation of UVA Executive Vice President for Health Affairs and UVA Health CEO Dr. Craig Kent back in March.

Four months later, UVA School of Medicine Dean Melina Kibbe and University Medical Center CEO Wendy Horton announced in July impending resignations for positions in Houston and San Francisco respectively.

Dr. Mitchell Rosner was named in September for Kent’s former position.

Kibbe’s and Horton’s former positions are still under interim leadership.

Becker’s report said, “These hospitals stand out for their exceptional clinical performance, unwavering focus on patient safety, and dedication to innovation, research and education. Their commitment to delivering outstanding patient experiences has earned them national recognition.”

In the listing, Becker’s noted, “It is home to Virginia’s first National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center, the state’s only comprehensive transplant center for adults and children, and the No. 1 children’s hospital in Virginia, with national rankings in nine pediatric specialties per U.S. News & World Report for 2025-26. The medical center is also nationally recognized for adult care, earning high-performing ratings in four adult specialties and 15 procedures and conditions. It ranks No. 5 statewide for adults and No.1 in the state for children.”

Dr. Rosner in a released statement said he witnessed the extraordinary care provided at UVA Health long before he took the helm as the health system’s leader in 2025.

“As their colleague for 20 years, I’ve seen first-hand the incredible care our team members provide to patients each and every day, and this honor from Becker’s reflects our team’s dedication to our patients and our communities.”

“Our team is also seeking new and better ways to serve our patients and make it easier for them to get the care they need,” said Terrie Edwards, interim chief executive officer of UVA Health University Medical Center.

“Their commitment to our patients is truly outstanding, and I’m so excited to see them recognized by Becker’s.”

The UVA Medical Center and INOVA Fairfax in Falls Church are the only two hospitals in the Commonwealth in this listing.
