CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – The Cavalier Daily editorial board Monday joined the UVA Student Council as two top student-led organizations lambasting the Board of Visitors’ decision Friday to choose a new University President.

“After months characterized by votes of no confidence and numerous protests, the Board chose to appoint the 10th president of the University on the last day of the fall semester — a day when most students had left for winter break,” the Cav Daily board wrote.

In fact, the reporter covering the Presidential appointment Friday said he was there partly because he lives in the Charlottesville area, and most if not all the staff had left Grounds for the holidays.

“We, as a University community, should be exhausted by and furious at the Board’s continual refusal to prioritize any member of the community besides itself,” the editorial board continued.

Cav Daily took a couple of days to craft its reaction to the unanimous BOV approval of Scott Beardsley as the University’s 10th President.

Student Council, which had previously on August 8 gave a vote of “no confidence”, issued another statement the day of Beardsley’s appointment that said, “After negotiations between major stakeholders and the University of Virginia Board of Visitors, it has become clear that the board is neglecting the damage a rushed Presidential selection will do to Our University.”

The Council board wrote, “Not only has the Board’s credibility been altered with much of the student, faculty, staff, and alumni bases, but the present actions threaten student constituencies.”

The Cav Daily editorial asserts not only was the Beardsley selection made without adequate “community presence”, but it’s made by a board “seemingly not legally constituted.”
