CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – Police have now apprehended two of the three suspects who fled the scene of a city shooting Monday, then fled in a stolen car, driving away from the city toward Scottsville, before wrecking.

The suspect, a 15-year-old male, was charged by ACPD with underage possession of a firearm and brandishing a firearm. He is being held at the Blue Ridge Juvenile Detention Center.

A juvenile is in custody following a high-speed chase that started in the city and ended with a crash on Scottsville Road, after which two suspects took off on foot.

At approximately 10:22 p.m. Monday, Charlottesville police officers on foot patrol in the 1000 block of 1st Street South heard gunshots in the area. Responding officers then saw a vehicle speed away. The vehicle, which was learned to have been stolen out of Albemarle County earlier in the day, first sped down Avon Street before eventually crashing in the 3000 block of Scottsville Road.

Inside the vehicle, responders found a 14-year-old male suffering from non-life-threatening injuries sustained in the crash. They also recovered AR-style rifle.

Two additional males were observed fleeing from the crash. Local law enforcement initiated a search in the 3400 block of Scottsville Road. At approximately 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, a homeowner in the 3800 block of Scottsville Road provided law enforcement with home surveillance footage that showed one of the suspects still in the area.

Albemarle and Charlottesville Police continued their search efforts with assistance from the University of Virginia Police, the Louisa County Sheriff’s Office, and Virginia State Police. At approximately 3:45 p.m., ACPD officers engaged in a foot pursuit with one of the two suspects, who brandished a firearm at officers before being taken into custody with the assistance of a K-9.

The second suspect who fled the crash has yet to be located. Investigators do not believe there is an ongoing threat to the community.

Officers in Charlottesville recovered 49 cartridge casings from the shooting on 1st Street South.

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to contact Crime Stoppers at 434-977-4000. Calls may remain anonymous.
