One Killed, One Injured in Rio Hill Drive Shooting

ALBEMARLE COUNTY, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – One person was killed and a second injured during a Saturday, October 19, 2024, shooting in the 1600 block of Rio Hill Drive.

Units from Albemarle County Police and Albemarle Fire Rescue were dispatched to a shots fired incident at approximately 8:00 p.m. They arrived to find the body of Zerrion Eubanks-Warfield, 23, of Charlottesville. A second victim was taken to the University of Virginia Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries. Several vehicles were struck, as were several apartments. The second victim has not been identified. Investigators believe the shooting to be gang-related.

People on social media posted reports of multiple shots, some expressing fear and others anger. Descriptions included “like fireworks” and “like a war zone.”

On January 16, 2020, Eubanks-Warfield, then a Waynesboro resident, was a suspect in a 10:45 a.m. shooting that led to a limited elementary school lockdown in that city. More than 20 rounds were fired, with several vehicles struck. Eubanks-Warfield turned himself in that night. According to court records, he pled guilty to malicious wounding in September 2020, and was sentenced to 10 years with 6 years, 2 months suspended followed by 3 years of probation.

The Rio Hill Drive shooting remains under investigation. At approximately 8 pm on Saturday, October 19, 2024, units from Albemarle County Police and Fire Rescue were dispatched to the 1600 block of Rio Hill Drive following reports of multiple gunshots and suspected injuries.

Upon arrival, officers found Zerrion Eubanks-Warfield, 23, of Charlottesville, VA, deceased. Another victim was transported to the University of Virginia Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries. The incident involved multiple gunshots, with several vehicles and apartments struck. Investigators believe the shooting is gang-related.

There remains an increased police presence in the area as the Albemarle County Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division continues its active investigation.

ALBEMARLE COUNTY, VA – At approximately 8 pm, units from Albemarle County Police Department and Albemarle County Fire Rescue were dispatched to the 1600 block of Rio Hill Drive for a shots fired incident with injuries. At this time, we are asking the community to avoid the area as officers investigate and secure the scene.

This remains an active investigation by ACPD’s Criminal Investigation Division, and information will be released when it becomes available.
