CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – A 35-year-old Mineral man drowned Tuesday night in Lake Anna, according to the Louisa County Sheriff’s Office.

Andrew Glen Knight died when the kayak he and a boy were in capsized. Neither was wearing a life vest, according to a release from the sheriff’s office.

Deputies were dispatched around 8:05 p.m. to the commons area of Lakeview Drive near Mineral for a report of a possible drowning involving an overturned kayak.

“A concerned citizen nearby immediately responded and was able to safely assist the child into the boat,” the release stated.

Witnesses told deputies they believe the man was attempting to push the kayak toward the shore when he went underwater.

Several people endeavored into the water and tried unsuccessfully to find him.

Louisa County deputies responded, ultimately requesting a Spotsylvania County dive team.

About an hour into the search, those divers found Knight and pronounced him deceased at the scene.

The incident is under investigation.
