Harry Bowen, Jr. of Charlottesville, Va. died on May 20, 2024. Born in Portland, Maine, he was predeceased by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Bowen, Sr. of Midlothian, Va.., his grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Hedley Bowen of Crozet, Va. and Mr. and Mrs. William Hickson of Lynchburg, Va.; and his brother, Richard H. Bowen of Bedford, Mass.
He is survived by his wife of 36 ½ years, Anabel Smith Bowen, his sons Richard C. Bowen and his wife Amy Abelove of Watertown, Mass., William M. Bowen of Winchester, Va.; grandsons Maxwell A. Bowen and Eli A. Bowen of Watertown, Mass.; granddaughters Sydney Ann Bowen of Lewes, Del. and Abby M. Bowen of Winchester, Va.; and great-granddaughter Mia M. Gomez-Bowen.
Harry graduated from The Episcopal High School and Virginia Tech where he wrestled and played football. He was a Medical Science Liaison/Central Nervous Systems for the Upjohn Company for 32 years followed by similar assignments for 5 years with Glaxo Wellcome. He fostered collaboration with major research institutions searching for new drugs and new uses for existing ones, particularly in the areas of depression, anxiety disorders and spinal cord and head injury. He was the recipient of the W. E. Upjohn Award given to the outstanding employee of the year and was recognized numerous times by the Upjohn Academy for of outstanding accomplishments.
Harry and Anabel retired to Charlottesville in 1997 where he had loved spending high school and college summers on his grandparents’ farm in Crozet. A member of Christ Episcopal Church, he served as Junior and Senior Warden. He loved his family, his church, his garden and his Hokies. He was happiest when his sons and grandchildren visited or on his John Deere cutting grass or going to Hokie football games.
A memorial service will be held at Christ Episcopal Church, 120 W. High St., Charlottesville on Friday, May 24, 2024 at 11 a.m. Interment will be in Charleston, S.C. at Magnolia Cemetery at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be sent to Christ Episcopal Church Endowment Fund (100 W. Jefferson St, Charlottesville, VA 22902), Virginia Tech Athletic Scholarship Fund (The Virginia Tech Athletic Fund, P. O. Box 10307. Blacksburg, VA 24062-0307), the National Cathedral Building Restoration Fund (3101 Wisconsin Ave., Washington, DC 20016) or a charity of your choice.
