CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – VDOT announces work beginning October 7 replacing the Fontaine Avenue bridge over Morey Creek between the Route 29 bypass interchange and the Ragged Mountain Reservoir. Inspectors have recently found the concrete slab bridge built in 1932 “structurally deficient”, and workers will replace the old bridge with a new box culvert that meets current design and safety standards. VDOT shows the bridge carrying some 1700 vehicles a day, and the work is expected to be completed in spring 2007.

During the construction work, Fontaine will be reduced to a single, narrowed travel lane carrying alternating traffic controlled by a temporary traffic signal. Drivers can also expect intermittent flagging Monday through Friday between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m., and all should use caution and expect delays approaching and through the work zone.

All work is weather permitting.
