CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW)- Charlottesville Police are investigating a reported sexual assault at the Free Bridge Encampment on Thursday evening, the CPD announced.
Officers, including detectives and forensic technicians, made contact with the victim, who told them they had been raped, possibly by an individual known to the victim.
“The (Department) is aware of the significant public interest surrounding the encampment and is sensitive to the circumstances involved,” the CPD release stated. “Out of respect for the victim and the integrity of the ongoing investigation, no further details will be released at this time.”
The incident comes on the heels of a fire that broke at the encampment on June 30, as well as an individual found deceased at the encampment one month ago on June 10.
