CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLERIGHTNOW.COM) – Anthony Hopkins, 20, has been arrested in connection with the July 4 shooting that left five people injured, Charlottesville Police chief Michael Kochis announced Thursday.
The investigation is ongoing and Kochis said police are seeking more suspects.
“We know there are others involved,” Kochis said during a briefing Thursday afternoon. “We are actively working to identify and hold every person accountable.”
Hopkins, who is also facing charges in Albemarle County in connection with a May 24 shooting at Brookdale Apartments, was arrested during the serving of a search warrant Wednesday night.
Earlier Thursday, Albemarle County Police announced they had chargedĀ Hopkins with four felonies, including attempted malicious wounding, shooting from a vehicle, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony and gang participation.
Hopkins is being held without bond at the Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail. Hopkins was officially booked at 1:18 a.m. Thursday, according to an ACPD spokesperson.
Multiple residential buildings and vehicles were struck by gunfire during the May 24 incident, but no injuries were reported.
In the July 4 incident, five people were shot, with all surviving.
The new charges include two counts of malicious wounding, two counts of the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, two counts of reckless handling of a firearm, and two counts of reckless discharge of a firearm.
On July 4, at approximately 11:23 p.m., CPD officers responded to multiple calls of gunshots being fired near Orangedale Ave. Upon arriving, police found five people injured, including two children.
The victims included a 52-year-old female, an 18-year-old female, a 17-year-old male, an 11-year female and a 9-year-old male.
Because of crowds in the area on the holiday night, medical units were not immediately able to reach the scene, according to the CPD release at the time.
“Thanks to the quick and selfless actions of those first responders, every one of those victims survived,” Kochis said.
