Virginia athletics organization plans no changes to its policy for trans athletes

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — The athletics sanctioning organization that oversees most high school sports in Virginia is telling schools this week it has no immediate plans to change its regulations governing the participation of transgender athletes. That’s despite the recent rollout of new guidance from Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin’s administration on policies for trans students. The Youngkin administration’s guidance says student participation in athletics should be determined by sex, rather than gender identity. But the Virginia High School League’s executive director recommends the league’s existing policies not be changed. Those currently allow transgender athletes to participate on teams that match their gender identity under certain conditions. Observers say the situation will create confusion.
