Charlottesville City Council asking General Assembly for regional transportation authority funding enablement

CHARLOTTESVILLE (WINA) – Albemarle County is working on funding proposals as Charlottesville City Council is asking the General Assembly for localities be able to impose a 1-cent local sales tax increase to fund regional transportation authorities. The proposal is among a string of General Assembly requests Council passed requested by both the city and the Thomas Jefferson Planning District Commission. Councilor Michael Payne says this funding mechanism is key in providing real and usable public transportation.

Charlottesville and Albemarle County are working with CAT re-routes, and Albemarle County has unveiled its first microtransit initiative in the Pantops area… but these are just the beginning.

Mayor Lloyd Snook notes the city and county have the authority to create such an authority… but has no authority to get any money for it.
