AUGUSTA COUNTY, Va. (WINA) – An Augusta County Sheriff’s deputy suffered minor injuries after being struck on I-81 Sunday night by a tractor-trailer that then sped off.

ACSO says the deputy was traveling north near mile marker 220 around 9:48 p.m. when he entered a VDOT work zone and was struck from behind by an unknown big rig, which failed to stop.

The impact sent the cruiser approximately 100 feet down the interstate and into a VDOT truck. Striking the truck’s energy-absorbing bumper caused the cruiser to spin around.

VDOT workers assisted the deputy, who was unable to use his radio due to severe damage to his patrol unit.

The deputy was taken to Augusta Health for minor injuries with no injuries for the VDOT workers at the scene.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the Virginia State Police at 540-885-2142.
